Chapter 11

“Hey, hey!” Zed said, chasing after her. “Wait a minute. Wait a minute.”

“Yeah,” Red added. “Don’t just leave us like this.”

“You know,” Zed said when Harley turned to look at him. “I don’t understand why you’re spending time with Kingsley and Oak. I mean, they were in this, too, you know.”

“They were in what, Zed? What is it that happened that seems to be so important to you?”

“Damn it, Harley. How can you not remember? Were you traumatized and you’ve blocked it out?”

“Block what out?”

“The night at the gallery!” Zed said, clearly exasperated.

“Zed, you don’t have to shout. Look, I don’t remember.”

“But Kingsley and Oak tried to humiliate you. Why are you sleeping with them?”

Harley looked pointedly at him. “Are you jealous? Is that what this is all about?”

“No,” Zed said. “I mean… Okay. Maybe a bit. I mean, why them and not us?”

“Look,” Harley said. “Why don’t you tell me exactly, I mean exactly, what supposedly happened on this gallery night.”

“We all arrived at the gallery together,” Zed said.

“Who?”

“Me, Zed, Kingsley, Oakley and you.”

“Okay.”

“And when we arrived, all of your beautiful paintings had been slashed,” Zed went on.

“Yeah,” Red said. “They were ruined. Scrapped.”

Harley gasped in feigned horror. “Is that it? A few ruined paintings? I’m not that delicate a flower, guys. I’m not going to go sobbing to my room over a few ruined paintings.”

“No. That’s not all,” Red said.

“In the back room, instead of your paintings, the walls were covered with compromising photos of you,” Zed said.

“Photos? Where were the photos from?”

“From various times when you… you know,” Red said. “When we fooled around.”

“You knew about those photos?” Harley said.

They both nodded.

“Weren’t you in the photos as well?”

“No. We were cropped out.”

“Why?”

“You were the target. We wanted to humiliate you.”

“Why?” she said bluntly.

“So, you wouldn’t come back this year.”

“Why?” she pushed.

They both looked at her, no longer having an easy answer.

“What? You guy’s don’t even know why you didn’t want me back here?”

“Well, you’re the princess of Spring. You’re our enemy.”

“Are you saying you guys felt threatened by me? By little ole me? What did I ever do to you?”

“Well, nothing, but. I mean, it’s just the principle of the thing. We’re from Fall and you’re from Spring.”

“Hmm. That’s interesting. You don’t actually feel threatened by me, but you want me out of your school all the same. What does that say about you guys? Chicken? Wimps?”

“No,” Zed said, suddenly on the defensive. “We were defending our honor. You, Harley, are the enemy.”

“You know what? You guys are pathetic. And furthermore, you are the enemy. If it is true that I am from Spring, and if I really am the princess, then you are my enemy.”

Red stepped closer to her and put a gentle hand on her shoulder. “This is ridiculous,” he said softly. “All this talk about being enemies is crazy. Let our parents deal with that. Let the generals and soldiers deal with that. I just want to be with you, Harley. I’m a lover, not a fighter.
